CompuKids

Educational Support for Carroll County's Children

Today, schools provide children with access to computers and instruction for their use beginning at a very young age. The child with access to a computer at home has a great advantage when completing homework assignments, conducting research and writing papers for classes.

The focus of the CompuKids program is to level the playing field by providing computers to children in the county who could not otherwise afford one.

How the Program Works

Computers and accessories are donated to us from businesses, school departments and individuals. Volunteers then thoroughly clean each computer and repair those in need of minor work. Other volunteers install new operating systems, word processing software and virus scanning software on the computers. Once enough complete systems are ready for homes, families are scheduled to attend a training session and receive their computer.

During the training session, volunteers teach the families how to set up the computer, care for it and use the software. Each family also receives one year free internet service from Quantum Internet Service in Manchester, Maryland.

At the end of the training session, each family takes a computer home!

How You Can Help

The CompuKids program is almost entirely staffed by volunteers and we always need more. You do not need to be a member of the Tech Council or have extensive computer knowledge to volunteer. Just a few hours a month of your time is all we need.

Currently, our greatest need is for volunteers to assist with transporting computers to and from our storage facility, inventoring and organizing supplies and assisting families on training days. Please contact CompuKids Chairperson Bobby Keller if you can help.

Qualify for the CompuKids Program

Currently, we only accept qualified Caroll County families who have registered through the Carroll County HSP Family Links program. To learn more about the registration process, please contact CTC Administrator Tracy Turner or call 443-244-1262.
