Christine Plater and Bob Eppes from GOBA and DBED gave a presentation on Doing Business with the State. Bob covered areas dealing with finance and Christine gave more technical assistance. Essentially there are three areas of concern: Tech Assistance to get a company to a level of efficiency, Financing to help ramp up quickly with staff, space and supplies and Opportunity to help find the deals. Each area was covered with some detail. Members were encouraged to use the GOBA and DBED offices to be sure you are set up and ready if you have an interest in doing business with the state.

Event / Committee Reports

Advisors
Lynn reported that the Advisor categories are currently filled. New categories will be discussed by the Executive Committee. There have been 3 articles in the Carroll County Times. We have articles thru early September. The next one will be in the paper on July 17.
CompuKids
Lynn reported that there have been 4 computers received from the Phoenix Project that will be disseminated on the 14th by CompuKids. PCI modems are needed. Lynn has 4. Volunteers are needed next month. Lynn will be scheduling a CompuKids workday.
Events
Judy reported that the Events Committee is working on an event for the fall that will include recognition. Something along the lines of the Opening Event.
Ask the Expert
Ask the Experts is in full swing. Flyers were available for distribution.
Marketing / PR
Josh reported that letters are being developed to send to local businesses. This is a cooperative effort with Tom Rasmussen and Denise Beaver. The purpose is to interest local businesses in the Carroll Tech Council and also to attract new tech companies to Carroll County.
Legislative
Robert Wack reported that the Public Network Consortium Report is due soon. There should be a report within the month on the Tech Park on Rt 97.
Website
Jon reported that updates are in the works and Lynn will soon be able to update the site. The logo is now a download. There will be changes to the directory by the end of summer. LOCATE is almost finished. This will enable people to find companies easily. There will be a CTC logo beside those listed that are members of the council. It was suggested that there be videostreaming of Technically Correct made available for those who don't have cable access. Info will be posted. Tech Trivia has been added to the site but you must watch the show for the answer.
Membership
There are currently 33 paid members and 19 unpaid. Brian and Janice Holsonbake were welcomed as new members.
Who Owns The Internet?
Josh led a discussion on Who Owns The Internet. Questions have been raised about root servers, where the hubs are in Carroll County and in Maryland. Andrew Gilley informed us that the hubs are controlled by MCI and the main one was in Columbia with May East in Herndon. Denise related that Carroll does have an underground facility and that there is a Disaster Planning Committee that stays on top of the issues. Further discussion will take place at next month's meeting.
