Carroll Technology Council's
CompuKids Program Seeking Donations
The Carroll Technology Council's CompuKids Program, which places refurbished computer equipment in homes of at need school-aged children in Carroll County, is seeking computer donations to fulfill the current requests of the community.
Resources for the Community
Through the efforts of Tech Council's members, CompuKids has placed approximately 40 computers into homes throughout the county. However, this program has been expanded to include nonprofit organizations that serve Carroll County. CompuKids has placed 30 computers into various nonprofit organizations with the intent of enabling them to use their resources for the community services they provide.
Partnerships have been established to assist CompuKids. Carroll County Public Library provides one year of Internet access to families, and Carroll Community College gives an adult in the family a computer class to help them have the knowledge necessary to take advantage of the computer's technology.
CompuKids has recently partnered with the Department of Social Services. A flyer was sent out to their customers that receive Purchase of Care (POC) and who also have school aged children. As a result, CompuKids has received more requests than available computers.
Donation Information
A donation date has been set for next Thursday, August 24th for 10 of the 20 families on the waiting list to receive their computers. The goal was to have as many computers placed into homes before school begins August 28th. Once additional computers have been received at the Tech Council, a CompuKids WorkDay will be scheduled for volunteers to assist in getting the systems ready.
CompuKids is currently seeking sources for computers, such as businesses that are upgrading to more powerful systems. The specifications for donations are: PC's with Pentium 3 processors, a minimum of 10 GB hard drive, and CD-Rom. Also needed are modems so that families can use the Internet provided by the library.
If you have computers to donate, please contact the Tech Council at 443-244-1262. More information can be obtained from the Tech Council's website at www.carrolltechcouncil.org.
